Interview with Mabel
“It used to be lovely around here, just the twenty of us. All girls together, sisters we are—we’ve known each other from the start. We yolked around in our eggs, climbed perches together, learned how to scratch and chase the bugs, and run and hide when given a caterpillar from the vegie garden. Endless days of dust baths, clucking and laying.
How the times have changed.
I don’t mind adolescents, teenagers in the right place at the right time, but gosh—forty, here, right now, in my run—it’s just too much.”
